Possessive Nouns

What are they?? The possessive form of a noun shows ownership or relationship.

Here are some examples: The divers waited outside the archaeologist’s tent. What does this show? Ownership. The tent belongs to the archaeologist.

Another Example: The archaeologist’s family had come to visit. What does this show? A relationship between the archaeologist and his/her family.

When can we use possessive nouns? You may use possessive nouns in the place of longer phrases.

For example: The divers used a robot to find the location of the ship. Can we shorten this? The divers used a robot to find the ship’s location.

Spelling Rules! Singular Add an apostrophe and s. For example: Mars Mars’s orbit

Spelling Rules! Plural ending in –s. Add an apostrophe. For example: Travelers Travelers' postcards

Spelling Rules! Plural not ending in –s. Add an apostrophe and s. For example: Men Men’s shoes

Why does this matter?? When you write, be sure you have formed the possessive correctly. A misplaced apostrophe can confuse the reader.
