3 Main Verbs and Helping Verbs A verb may be more than one word The main verb is the most important verb The helping verb comes before the main verb Ex. I am going to the store. hv mv

5 Being Verbs A being verb shows that someone or something is Being verbs do not express any actions Example: Sean is an athlete.

6 Common Being Verbs Here are examples of common being verbs: am, was, has been, will be, is, were, have been, shall be, are, had been

7 Present, Past, and Future The tense of the verb lets you know whether something happens in the present, past or in the future.

8 Verb Tenses RulesExamples A verb in the present tense shows action that is happening now Dogs chase balls. Scott swims on a team. A verb in the past tense shows action that has already happened. Many verbs in past tense end with –ed. I finished my sandwich. Sophia watched a movie. A verb in the future tense shows action that will happen. Verbs in the future tense use the helping verb will. Alli will go shopping after school. They will rest after the race.

9 Irregular Verbs There are three forms of verbs: present, past, and past participle The past participle is the form of the verb used with has, have had or will have An irregular verb does not form the past tense by adding –ed

11 Linking Verbs A linking verb is a being verb A linking verb does NOT show an action A linking verb “links” the subject to a noun, pronoun, or adjective.
