1 Using Metric Measurements in Equations Ms. Nugent Science 9

2 Metric Equations?  YES  Why? –The measurements we have used so far have been for regularly shaped objects…easy to measure  Linear, mass, liquid volume

3 Ways…  Measuring by difference –Volume  Metal stamp…  To find the volume of the stamp, we measure the volume of the water, add the stamp and measure the volume of the water again. Then..  Vol of 2 nd measurement – volume of 1st

4 Example:  You want to find the volume of a golf ball (those dimples make it hard). You find a large graduated cylinder and fill it to 30 mL. The water level goes The water level goes up to 67 mL. What up to 67 mL. What is the volume of the is the volume of the golf ball? golf ball?

5 Answer  67 mL – 30 mL = 37mL  Volume of golf ball = 37 mL  Notice how I labeled everything? You should too!

6 More equations..  Volume is also expressed as  Length x Width x Height for a box  Length x 1/2Width (aka base) x Height –For a triangle  Cm x cm x cm = cm 3

7 Example:  You want to find the volume of your suitcase. It has a height of 1.1 meters, a width of.35 meters and a length of.98 meters. What is the volume of the suitcase?

8 Answer  1.1 m x.35 m x.98 m =.37 m 3 .37m 3 = the volume of the suitcase

9 Area and Density Area and Density are two more equations that use metric measurements. Surface area is used to find the amount of space on one side of a plane side x side Density is the amount of mass per volume: how much mass in how much space.

10 Area  You want to find the area of your bedroom floor because you just got a new tv and want to see if it will fit. Its base measures:.56 m long and.35 m wide.

11 Answer: .56 m x.35 m = 0.196 m 2  = the area of the bottom of the tv

12 Density  The United States government has commissioned you to see if its new battle cruiser will sink or swim. Its mass is 35, 000 kg and it’s volume is 4,500,000 cm 3. What is its density?

13 Answer:  Density = mass/volume  D=m/v  Density=35,000kg___ 4,500,000cm 3 4,500,000cm 3 Density of battleship = 0.007 kg/cm 3
