Global Warming Pennsylvania Energy By: Team Energy
2
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Wind Energy Pennsylvania hopes to reduce the amount of energy use overall and expand the use of renewable energy. Pennsylvania leads the east coast in the production of wind energy.
3
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Wind Energy (con’t) At this point in time Pennsylvania is using 153 megawatts annually, which can power 70,000 homes, but if we used all of the wind energy available in all of Pennsylvania we could use 5,000 more megawatts annually, which would power 5,000,000 more homes.
4
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Wind Energy Usage Map
5
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Wind Energy Usage Companies that use wind energy in Pennsylvania are: Peco Wind Gamesa Corp. (Spanish Company that picked Pennsylvania for its United States Headquarters)
6
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Geothermal Energy PA doesn’t have much geothermal energy resources, but geothermal energy isn’t used for electricity, which is a big energy need, but for heating.
7
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Hydropower Energy PA has a low usage of hydropower energy used for electricity compared to the percentage of electricity PA uses overall.
8
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Hydropower Energy (con’t) There are 104 known located within six major river basins of Pa. The amount of sites in each basin goes from three in the Ohio River to 32 in the Susquehanna River
9
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Hydropower Energy (con’t) Fifty-six percent of the undeveloped sites of the hydropower energy potential are located in the Susquehanna River Basin.
10
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Solar Energy (con’t) Pennsylvania receives just as much solar radiation as South Florida in June. There are two types of solar radiation collectors: Flat-Plate Collectors Concentrating Collectors
11
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Solar Energy Flat-Plate Collector These solar collectors are tilted at the sun according to their latitude. They collect solar radiations from direct sunlight and reflected sunlight. PA uses these collectors well as resources.
12
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Solar Energy Concentrating Plates These collectors track the sun at all times. They only collect solar radiations from direct sunlight, but it is stronger. PA does not use these collectors well as resources.
13
PA Inexhaustible Energy Resources: Solar Energy Usage Things Pennsylvania use solar power for are: Cooking Lighting Energy Appliances Cars Heating Systems About 16,500 people in Pennsylvania use solar power
14
PA Renewable Energy Resources: Biomass Energy Researchers say that Pennsylvania has a good potential in the biomass energy department. Biomass energy is the energy that is produced from living or dead biological materials such as burning wood.

PA Renewable Energy Resources: Biomass Energy Quantities:

PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Resource Map
17
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Oil Energy Oil is found mostly in the northwestern part of PA. The deeper the oil is the closer it will be to Lake Erie and will become closer to the surface as it moves away from Lake Erie.
18
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Natural Gas Energy Natural gas is a clean, non-toxic, gas mined from oil and gas wells. Natural gas is found on the western edge, the northern edge and the northwestern corner of PA.
19
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Coal Energy Coal is found in the southwestern and northeastern part of PA. Coal is used to generate electricity. Coal is estimated to run out in about 250 years.
20
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Coal Energy Pollution Emissions from coal-fired power plants cause smog and soot that cause: Asthma attacks Other respiratory problems Acid rain that destroys our forests and lakes It also produces mercury, when it is burning, which causes neurological damage. It also produces carbon dioxide which causes green house gases
21
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Nuclear Fission Energy Nuclear fission is when neutrons are fired at uranium rods causing a chain reaction that eventually forms to make steam that turns a generator. There are five major power plants in PA.
22
PA Non-Renewable Energy Resources: Nuclear Fission Energy Power Plants The five major power plants in PA are: Beaver Valley (First Energy Nuclear Operating Corporation) – 2 reactors Limerick (Exelon Corp.) – 2 reactors (Largest Generator) Peach Bottom (Exelon Corp.) – 2 reactors Susquehanna (PPL Susquehanna LLC) – 2 reactors Three Mile (AmerGen Energy Co./Exelon Corp.) – 1 reactor (Smallest Generator)

Pennsylvania Energy: Ways to Save Replacing a single incandescent bulb with a CFL will keep a half-ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb. 12,476,110 is the projected population of Pennsylvania and
24
Pennsylvania Energy: Ways to Save (con’t) if everyone used a CFL over an incandescent bulb, we will prevent 12,476,110,000 lbs of CO2 from getting into the atmosphere. As of 2000, if every one of the 29,364 people that live in Drexel Hill used a CFL instead of an incandescent bulb, we will prevent 29,364,000 lbs of CO2 from getting into the air.
