Physical and Chemical Properties
2
Physical Properties Physical property: a characteristic of a substance that describes it such as the color, luster, odor, hardness… (Things asked about in the 20 questions game.) Know the terms and definitions on page 85
3
Terms from page 85 Thermal conductivity: how well heat can flow through the substance. Ductility: the ability to be pulled and made into wire. Malleability: the ability to be rolled or pounded into various shapes.
4
Continued… Solubility: the ability to dissolve in another substance. Density: the “crowdedness” of the particles in the matter, the ratio of the mass to the volume. State of matter: solid, liquid, gas or plasma.
5
Chemical properties Chemical property: a characteristic of matter that describes its ability to participate in chemical reactions. Page 90
6
Key terms for Chemical Properties Reactivity: the ability of a substance to change into one or more new substances Flammability: the ability to burn Oxidation: the ability to react with oxygen Neutralizes: the ability to neutralize a substance
