3
What is a Physical Property?
4
What are physical properties? Color Shape Density Volume Length Location Temperature Speed
5
What is a Chemical Property? Materials properties that become obvious during a chemical reaction
6
What are Chemical Properties? Reactivity with other chemicals pH Toxicity Flammability Types of chemical bonds that will form
7
What is a Physical Change? Affects the form of substance but not the chemical composition Can you name examples of physical changes?
8
What is a Chemical Change? A chemical change changes the arrangement of atoms – NOT THE ACTUAL ATOMS Key concept – Forms a NEW substance
9
How do we know a chemical change occurred? First question to ask yourself: “Is a new substance forming?” Other questions to ask: Is a gas forming? Are colors changing? Are different substances forming? If yes to any of these questions, indicates chemical change is taking place
