UNIT 9: GEOMETRY – 6 TH GRADE LESSON 2: AREA OF A PARALLELOGRAM
2
CORNELL NOTES HEADER Topic: Geometry 6 th Grade (Unit 9 pg. 2) E. Q.: How can applying geometric formulas help solve real-world problems? Name: _____________________________ Date: _____________________________ Class: _____________________________ Chp. 10 Lesson 1 –Area of a Parallelogram
3
VOCABULARY parallelogram – A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.
4
AREA OF A PARALLELOGRAM Area of a Parallelogram: A = bh where b = base (length of any of its sides) h = height (the perpendicular distance between the side whose length is the base and the opposite side) Ex. Find the area of a parallelogram. 5 m 2 m A = bh = 5(2) = 10 m 2
5
FINDING AN UNKNOWN DIMENSION Ex. The area of a parallelogram is 45 cm 2 and the height is 9 cm. What is the base? A = bh(Write the formula for the area of a parallelogram.) 45 = b(9)(Substitute the known values into the equation.) 45 = b(9)(Divide both sides of the formula by 9 to solve for b.) 9 9 5 cm = b(The length of the base is 5 cm.)
