Unit 3: Nomenclature Chapter 4 We can’t lean how to write chemical reactions unless we know how to name compounds! 1 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Your exam will count toward the same standard as Unit 2. HS-PS1-2: Explain reaction of valence electrons and periodic trends. Everything you need to know and all notes is found in chapter 4 of your book. Test questions will mimic practice problems assigned in book. No retakes unless all practice is in! 2 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

What you will be able to do! Estimated test date: Thursday November 5 th ▫Name/write formulas binary for type 1 compounds ▫Name/write formulas binary for type 2 compounds ▫Name/write formulas binary for type 3 compounds ▫Name/write formulas for polyatomic ion compounds ▫Name/write formulas for acids 3 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds p. 94-102 Start on page 94 A binary compound always contains a metal (positive charge ion or cation) with a nonmetal (negative charged ion or anion). What is a type 1 compound? What is a type 2 compound? What are the rules for naming Type 1 ionic compounds? Look over example 4.1 on p. 97. Complete “Practice Problem Exercise 4.1” on page 97 and hand in. 4 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.1 Part A – Naming Binary Compounds p. 94-102 Start on page 98 What is a type II binary compound? What does the roman numeral tell us? The tope of page 100 explains is all…how do you distinguish between a type 1 and type 2 binary compound? Look over practice problem 4.2 page 100-101 and 4,3 page 102. Complete “Practice problem Exercise 4.3” on page 102 on loseleaf and and hand in. Practice grade in I.C. 5 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.1 B Naming binary compounds that contain only nonmetals (type III) pages 103-105 Section starts on page 103 Type III compound contain only nonmetals What are the rules for naming type III compounds? You need to memorize table 4.3 on page 104. It is easier than you think! Look at example 4.4 on page 105 and 4.5 on page 105. Complete “Practice problem Exercise 4.4” on page 104 on loseleaf and hand in. Practice grade in IC. Complete “practice problem exercise 4.5” on page 105 and hand in. Practice grade in IC. 6 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.1 C – Naming binary Compounds: A review p 106-108 Section start on page 106 What is a type 1 binary compound? What is a type 2 binary compound? What is a type 3 binary compound? Look over chart on pages 106 and 107. Complete “Practice Problem Exercise 4.6” on page 107 1-7 and hand in. 7 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.2 Part A Naming and writing formulas for more complex compounds p. 109-115 Naming compounds that contain a polyatomic ion. You DO NOT need to memorize these polyatomic ion (although many general chemistry teachers have their students do so). What is a polyatomic ion? See list of polyatomic ions on next page. You will be given these. 8 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Polyatomic ions 9 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.2 Part A Naming and writing formulas for more complex compounds Look over example 4.7 on page 111. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.7” on page 111 and hand in. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.8” on page 112 and hand in. 10 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Section 4.2 Part B Naming Acids Page 113-115 What is an acid? What are the rules for naming acids? Look over example 4.9 on page 115. Complete and hand in “Practice Problem Exercise 4.9” on page 115 and hand in. 11 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4

Unit 3 Review work Complete and hand in Section 4.1 review questions on page 108 Complete and hand in Section 4.1 review questions on page 116 12 Unit 3: Nomenclature, Chapter 4
