Chemistry Nomenclature Lesson 1 A Quick Review and Off We Go!

Today’s Lesson Loose-leaf practice – 1 to 40 with the slides Then 3 Wizard sheets – handout to practice – Wizard sheet 1 and 2 with the periodic table – Wizard sheet 3 without the periodic table Last 5 minutes of class Exit card – 25 points with periodic table Homework – review ionic and covalent notes and complete wizard sheet #4. WE WANT TO GET VERY FAST AND ACCURATE WITH OUR NAMING! Good luck!

Instructions Take out a piece of paper Label it 1 to 20…we will do 1-20 correct and then do 20 more…brush up quickly you will need these skills! Consider this “Wizard Training”

So you want to become a naming wizard?!? 1. Ba 2. Fe 3. Cu 4. Na 5. Xe 6. V 7. C 8. Co 9. Ni 10. Mg barium iron copper sodium xenon vanadium carbon cobalt nickel magnesium

Find the Symbol that corresponds 11. flourine 12. lead 13. neon 14. aluminum 15. oxygen 16. boron 17. tin 18. rubidium 19. gold 20. selenium F Pb Ne Al O B Sn Rb Au Se

We are just beginning! Part B – No periodic table 21. Be 22. Ca 23. Fr 24. P 25. He 26. Ag 27. S 28. Mn 29. Al 30. Zn beryllium calcium francium phosphorous helium silver sulfur manganese aluminum zinc

Find the Symbol that corresponds 31. bromine 32. nitrogen 33. lithium 34. antimony 35. tin 36. strontium 37. iron 38. argon 39. bismuth 40. francium Br N Li Sb Sn Sr Fe Ar Bi Fr

Element Nomenclature – Page 1 and 2 Complete using your periodic table You can correct your work once we are done from the LCD Element Nomenclature – Page 1 and 2 Complete using your periodic table You can correct your work once we are done from the LCD

Corrections on Word for Wizard Sheet 1 and 2

Let’s Quickly Review Ionic and Covalent Bonding!

Ionic vs. Covalent IonicCovalent -Non-metal and a metal -Lewis symbols are drawn and electrons are transferred from one element to another so that both elements become stable. - Electron push diagram is used -Name the first element and then use the periodic table of ions to determine the ending of the second element. - All polyatomic elements are ionic. Use the polyatomic table to help you with these names. Polyatomics will contain more than two elements. -Two non-metals -Electrons are shared between two non- metals so that each element has a stable octect. -Lewis symbols are drawn for each element and then the lone elements go looking for a mate. -Structural diagrams -Naming: Prefix + element name Prefix+ element name + “ide”

Covalent Prefixes – we only use these for COVALENT BONDING!!!!! NumberPrefix 1Mono 2Di 3Tri 4Tetra 5Penta 6Hexa 7Hepta 8Octa

WATCH OUT! H 2 0 = Water NH 3 = ammonia NH 4 = ammonium CH 4 = methane PH 3 = phosphine AsH 2 = arsine N 2 H 4 = hydrazine Remember we are on the look out for the HOBrFINCl SP family and these special compounds too! The HOBrFINCl SP family will have chemical names of atmospheric hydrogen etc. and these compounds are named as listed on the left!

Element Nomenclature – Page 3 and 4 Complete using your periodic table You can correct your work once we are done from the LCD Element Nomenclature – Page 3 and 4 Complete using your periodic table You can correct your work once we are done from the LCD

5 Minutes to go! Crazy chemist countdown #1 – you can use your periodic table but you have to move QUICKLY! Don’t forget about the homework! Wizard Sheet #4
