3. Objective: Students will be able to explain what water pollution is and explain how it affects the animals in the water.

4. Materials and Websites You will need: Chart paper, markers, Science journal notebooks, Using Earth’s Resources student worksheets. Ocean related topics: http://www.noaa.gov UTube Reference: This short documentary was about a plastic bag. This documentary shows that a plastic bag that was thrown in the street. It traveled by wind through the streets, residential areas, parks, highways and finally ended up in the oceans and beaches. When a sea animal spotted the plastic bag, it tried to eat it because it resembled a jellyfish in the water,( because it was clear just like a jellyfish). The lesson is that when we pollute the water with garbage, the sea animals are mistaking it as food and they eat it and often times they die. 5. Smart Start What is water pollution? Vocabulary Words: Water Pollution: is the presence of any material in the water that is harmful to plants or animals, or affects its taste and odor, or detracts from any use that can be made of it. Aquatic Animals: are animals that live in the water.

6. Mini-Lesson:  You can introduce this lesson by using one of the book references above; reading just some or all of the book.  Ask the students if they have ever heard of the word, water pollution, and if so what does it mean?  After soliciting some of the student’s answers, give them the definition of “water pollution”.  Tell the students that oftentimes people do not always throw their waste in the trash. They just throw their waste on the ground or directly in the water. As a result, this water pollution can affect humans land and aquatic animals causing ailments and diseases. The aquatic animals may not be able to breathe under water or they will eat the waste and die when there is water pollution.  At this time, ask the students what they think the “aim” or the “smart start” of our lesson is today? They should say: “What is water pollution” or our lesson today is on water pollution.  If you are able to access the UTube documentary about a plastic bag (referenced above), then you can show it at this time just before they go off independently to work or at the very end of this lesson.>Before the students go to their group work or independent work quickly ask them what is water pollution? What was one way we discussed how water pollution can happen? Who does water pollution affect?

7. Application (Group Work) Either in a group or independently, have the students work on the Earth’s Resources student work sheet.In their Science notebook journal, have the students record what they learned about water pollution. Bloom’s Taxonomy Questions: (For the teacher to ask the students) >What do you think are some other things that can pollute the water that we did not already mention? (The answers may vary: pesticides, sewage or industrial wastes, etc.) >How do you think water pollution can affect a water habitat? >Can you think of the worst water pollution we experienced within the last year that made the headline news? (Answer: The BP Oil Spill)

8. Extensions: >Do a four square writing piece on ways water can be polluted. >Write an informational mini-report on how the sea animals are affected when the water is polluted.
