2 Context  Miami University is a liberal arts institution  Two years ago a university-wide discussion took place on what that meant and how we would fulfill that promise to our students  Result – Miami University 2020 plan  Followed by discussion of how Miami Plan (core requirement of all students) would be altered from its 30 year structure

3 External Constraints  AP, College Credit Plus and Transfer courses  Ohio Transfer Module  Meaning – concentrating our liberal education efforts in the first years was counterproductive  Result – revised Miami Plan for this year’s entering class

4 Features  Handout via Stephanie Beck  www.miamioh.edu/liberal-ed/ www.miamioh.edu/liberal-ed  As you examine, you will find some dual emphases – competencies (new) that can be assessed and traditional disciplinary breadth (derived by external constraints)

5 Essence – looks like a lot but much is achieved as a major is carried out  Foundation – core beginning courses (our transfer module)  Thematic Sequence  Experiential Learning  Intercultural Perspectives  Advanced Writing  Senior Capstone

6 Your potential roles  Eventually you will have some advising duties  Two sets of books for awhile  As you conduct courses within the plan make the listed competencies plain in your syllabus  Highlight them and make it plain that they are integral to the course  Consider serving on the LEC  We need innovative ideas
