1 IDEAS Character Development/Adding Details Materials Needed: Blank Paper for students Crayons/Markers/Colored Pencils for students Go Away, Big Green Monster! By Ed Emberley (optional…I wrote the story right in the slides) 1. Discuss the importance of being descriptive when introducing characters in writing pieces 2. As you read the story, Go Away, Big Green Monster!, have students draw what the author is describing page by page (or slide by slide) 3. Have students share their pictures and see what everyone has in common (meaning the author used good description) and what was different or lacked description Finally, share the picture of the Big Green Monster with students. How did student work compare to the original. What does the author need to include to get everyone’s picture the same? Do you know this story is also on iTunes? Check it out:

3 It is important for authors to add decsriptions of their characters so you can picture what they look like! Listen to the story, Go Away, Big Green Monster, and use the author’s words to draw a picture of the monster. Will we all see the same picture???

4 Big Green Monster has two big yellow eyes,

5 a long bluish-greenish nose,

6 a big red mouth with sharp white teeth,

7 two squiggly ears,

8 scraggly purple hair,

9 and a big scary green face!
But…

10 YOU DON’T SCARE ME! So GO AWAY, scraggly purple hair!

11 two little squiggly ears!
GO AWAY, two little squiggly ears!

12 GO AWAY, bluish-greenish nose!

13 GO AWAY, big green face!

14 GO AWAY, big red mouth!

15 GO AWAY, sharp white teeth!

16 GO AWAY, two big yellow eyes!

17 GO AWAY, Big Green Monster!

18 And DON’T COME BACK! Until I say so.

22 Writing Challenge… Look for descriptions of characters in the books you are reading. Can you picture that character in your mind? In your own writing, be sure to include detail to show your readers what the characters look like!
