Ulugh Beg (1393-1449) By Ashley Brewer

Who He Was He was a mathematician and an astronomer. He came to power and established a Madrasa where Astronomy was taught as a major subject.

Achievements Developed methods for giving accurate approximate solutions of cubic equations. Did work with the binomial theorem- an important formula giving the expansion of powers of sums. Made accurate tables of sines and tangents. developed formula of spherical trigonometry- is of great importance for calculations in astronomy and earth-surface and orbital and space navigation. Made the Catalogue of the stars, the first comprehensive stellar catalogue since that of Ptolemy.

Christiaan Huygens ( 1629- 1695) By Ashley Brewer

Who He Was A Dutch mathematician patented the first pendulum clock, which greatly increased the accuracy of time measurement. He laid the foundations of mechanics worked on astronomy and probability.

Achievements Around 1654 he devised a new and better way of grinding and polishing lenses. Using one of his own lenses, Huygens detected, in 1655, the first moon of Saturn. The following year he discovered the true shape of the rings of Saturn.

Continued He built several pendulum clocks to determine longitude at sea and they underwent sea trials in 1662 and again in 1686. He also focused a lot on the theory of collisions.
