I have a question about that. Could you repeat that? In other words, are you saying that…? Could you please explain what ______ means? So, do you mean…? Would you mind repeating that definition? Could you please say more about that? Could you give me an example of that? I’m not sure I understood that word/term/concept. Could you please give another example? What is the difference between ______ and ______?

13 Socratic Seminar Scoring Guide
Participates by doing at least one of the following: Building on the thoughts of others by using transitional words and phrases. Asking clarifying questions Quoting the text to support a point Using language of recognition and appreciation during discussions. Remember: Address (1) advanced skill No one wants a boring conversation – Be CREATIVE with your (5) questions.

14 Socratic Seminar Scoring Guide
Advanced = 3 points You must meet ALL proficient criteria plus one of the following to qualify: Actively incorporates others into the discussion Challenges ideas and conclusions in thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas Summarizes points of agreement and disagreement Qualifies or justifies own views and understanding Makes new connections in light of the evidence and reasoning presented.

15 Preparing for a Socratic Seminar
Use your sources to prepare statements and questions that you are want to present during tomorrow’s seminar. Remember, use this discussion will help you to gain ideas for writing your essay. Plan well and your essay will be easier to write  Look at the Scoring Guide and choose a goal for this session. Write this goal in the space provided.

18 Socratic Seminar #1 Find Your Shoulder Partner and say, “Don’t Leave me!” Partner A is the person with the person with the most pockets. Partner B will find a seat in the inside circle. Partner A will find a seat in the outside circle, close to their partner.

19 Socratic Seminar #1 Outside circle, fill in the heading of the Scoring Guide. Be sure to listen carefully. You may NOT check a box if you do not observe your partner doing the activity. I will be watching too. If you check an Advanced activity, you must note what they did next to the bullet if your partner is to get credit.

20 Socratic Seminar #1 Remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I will observe. There is ABSOLUTELY no talking unless you are contributing to the seminar. If you break this rule you will be removed from the seminar and receive a “0” for today’s presentation. Listen carefully, respond thoughtfully, and stay on topic. Use the “Bounce Cards” and the posters for help.

21 Socratic Seminar #1 Remember, you are in charge of the seminar. I will observe. Inside circle, the first part of the seminar will last 8 minutes.. You will then have 2 minutes to conference with your partner so that you may get ideas and add more to the discussion. Your discussion will continue for 5 more minutes. Time to debrief and switch!

22 DE-BRIEFING In the course of the seminar:
What was the most interesting question? What was the most interesting idea to come from a participant? What was the best thing you observed? What was the most troubling thing you observed? What do you think should be done differently in the next seminar?
