Members of the Legislative Assembly REP DAY NOVA SCOTIA
2
What is an MLA? A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a person elected to a seat in the Nova Scotia legislature who serves as a representative of one of the province’s 51 ridings. Any Canadian citizen 18 years of age and older can become an MLA.
3
Job Description When the legislature is sitting, MLAs are responsible for proposing, studying, debating, and voting on bills (potential laws) and raising issues that concern their constituents. When the legislature is not sitting, MLAs spend their time meeting with their constituents to discuss their concerns and to provide guidance and advice relating to government services.

Final Thoughts What do you think the purpose of an MLA should be? Do you think MLAs should have a formal job description? What should it include? What qualities and past experience do you look for in your elected representative?
