WAIS: Wide Area Information Server - Search databases - Powerful to fine-tune the search - Be able to retrieve the information & store it Distributed System: lets you to search on all the data distribute among many computers - Client Software: search WAIS databases - Database Library - FAQ - Available with Telnet and Gopher

8 How WAIS Works? WAIS Search: 1. Client Software sends a search request to a WAIS Database 2. The software gets the result (List of documents) before displaying them to users AltaVista: organize WebPages into a database then allow users to search through it

9 FTP and Downloading Files Transfer Files from computer on the Internet to another computer File types: Programs, graphics, sounds, text FTP Protocol: FTP.FTPFTP.FTP Client/ server Model On the FTP Server: FTP Daemon allows to download files FTP Websites: account number + password File size: large files causes problems in downloading, so on FTP server files are compressed from 10 – 50 percent. After downloading, user can decompress files to use them
