Royal Proclamation of 1763 -Britain won control of all of North America in 1759 by winning the 7 years war -King George III drafted the document -legally acknowledges Britain's claim to all of North America

Purpose of Royal Proclamation 1. Legally Claim all of North America as part of the British Empire 2. Create Laws and Rules in ‘Merica 3. Stabilize relationships with FNs

Key Points of the Royal Proclamation 1. Aboriginal Title to the land FNs “own” all lands in N. America 2. Colonists / Settlers cannot buy or settle land themselves 3. Land must be purchased via TREATY NEGOTIATION between FNs and Crown 4. BC IGNORED THIS ENTIRELY!!!!!!!!!!!

James Douglas Early Career as Governor of BC -followed Royal Proclamation -Signed 14 Treaties on Vancouver Island Known as Douglas Treaties -land was surrendered “entirely + forever” -FNs retained hunting + fishing rights -married FN woman – Amelia Connolly Douglas

James Douglas Late Career as Governor: -did not follow Royal Proc (no treaties) -created Reserves land owned by crown; set aside for FNs 10 acres max per FN family -encouraged FNs to Pre-empt land receive free land (160 acres) from crown must clear land and farm it -

Joseph Trutch 2 nd Governor of BC: a mean and racist dude! -did not follow Royal Proclamation -believed FNs never owned the land -believed land was “empty” and free for taking -believed Douglas was to far to generous -reduced reserve sizes -developed extremely racist and unfair policies against FNs ex.
