6. James Douglas Early Career as Governor of BC -followed Royal Proclamation -Signed 14 Treaties on Vancouver Island  Known as Douglas Treaties -land was surrendered “entirely + forever” -FNs retained hunting + fishing rights -married FN woman – Amelia Connolly Douglas

7. James Douglas Late Career as Governor: -did not follow Royal Proc (no treaties) -created Reserves  land owned by crown; set aside for FNs  10 acres max per FN family -encouraged FNs to Pre-empt land  receive free land (160 acres) from crown  must clear land and farm it -
