 Function  Breathing  Provide oxygen to the body  Inhalation  Remove carbon dioxide from the body  Exhalation  Parts  Nose  Pharynx  Epiglottis  Larynx  Trachea  Lungs  Bronchi  Bronchioles  Alveoli

 Nose  Nostrils (nares)  Opening to the nasal cavity.  Lined w/ mucosa  Septum  Cartilage that divides nasal cavity into R / L  Cilia  Nasal hair  Filters air

 Pharynx (fair – inks)  Aka Throat  3 divisions  Nasopharynx  Oropharynx  Laryngopharynx  Double function  Breathing  Swallowing  Connects nasal cavity to the trachea

 Epiglottis  Flap of cartilage tissue  Covers the esophagus while breathing  Covers the trachea and larynx while swallowing

 Larynx (Lair – inks)  Voice box  Vocal cords  Bands of tissue create the sound of your voice  Laryngitis  Inflammation of the vocal cords  Adam’s apple  Cartilage that surrounds the voice box  Aka Thyroid cartilage

 Trachea  Aka ‘windpipe’  Breathing tube  Connects the larynx to the lungs  Held open by ‘C’ shaped cartilage rings  Tracheotomy  ER breathing hole

 Bronchi  2 divisions off of the trachea  Main breathing tube to each lung  R / L bronchus  Divides into smaller air tubes called  Bronchioles

 Bronchioles  Smaller branches off of the bronchi  Connects bronchi to the alveoli  Alveoli  ‘grape like’ clusters  Form ‘air sacs’  Gas exchange takes place here.

 Lungs  2 cone shaped organs  Exchange gases  Pleura  Membrane that surrounds each lung  Contains pleural fluid  Reduces friction while breathing

 In dentistry the respiratory system relates to cross contamination (inhalation), hyperventilation, vital signs and administration of medications (N 2 O).  You are the ‘expert’….you should know more than your patients…..  Any questions….????
