3 This lesson will address the following Standards: Why are politics, law and government found in all societies? (MO 1.3, 1.6) How do governments prevent and resolve conflicts and try to meet personal and social needs? (MO 1.3, 1.6)

4 This lesson will address the following Hazelwood Objectives: Interpret reasons for conflict among groups in U.S. society.(Change 1850-1900) Analyze and evaluate decisions made to handle group conflict in the United States after the Civil War. (Change 1850-1900)

5 In the 1960’s, a Civil Rights Movement began. Some very important Civil Rights leaders of the the 60’s were Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

6 Why should President Lincoln be considered a Civil Rights Leader for the 1800’s?

7 Sample Journal President Lincoln should be considered a Civil Rights leader for the 1800’s because he took a stand for the African-Americans in our country. In his Emancipation Proclamation, he declared that on January 1, 1863, all slaves in the Confederacy would be “forever free”.
