City State System The Greeks formed different city states based on natural geography. These city-states each formed their own government.

Monarchy State ruled by a king Rule is hereditary Some rulers claim divine right Practiced in Mycenae

Aristocracy State ruled by nobility Rule is hereditary and based on family ties, social rank, wealth. Social status and wealth support rulers’ authority Practiced in Athens (before 594 B.C.)

Oligarchy State ruled by a small group of citizens Rule is based on wealth or ability. Ruling group controls military Practiced in Sparta

Direct Democracy State ruled by its citizens (citizens are only males) Rule is based on citizenship Majority rule decides votes Practiced in Athens (after 500 B.C.)
