Before reading Discussion Talk about the following questions with your classmates. 1. What kind of person would you like to make friends with? 2. Do you have a friend who has a similar personality with you?

(You may add more information here. ) 7. (You may add more information here. )

1. You may be more similar to your friends than you think: a recent study suggests that the DNA code tends to be more alike between friends than between strangers. 2. Then they examined the DNA code of each participant to see how similar the friend pairs were and how similar the stranger pairs were. 3. So it is fair enough for friends to say, “We are just like family,” or “Friends are the family you choose.” Word List 1. similar adj. 相似的 2. participant n. 参与者 Grammar adj. + enough + (for sb.) + to do sth.  此句型意为 “ (某人)做某事是 足够 …… 的 ” ,可与 so + adj. + that 从句作转换。 e.g. My brother is old enough to get the driving license.  My brother is so old that he can get the driving license. 5 You may be more similar to your friends than you think: a recent study suggests that the DNA code tends to be more alike between friends than between strangers. Researchers from the University of California and Yale University compared gene variations ( 基因的差别 ) between nearly 2,000 unrelated people, among which there were 1,367 pairs of close friends. Then they examined the DNA code of each participant to see how similar the friend pairs were and how similar the stranger pairs were. The research found that friends have one percent of genes that match. That means pairs of friends had the same level of genetic relation as people did with a fourth cousin or a great-great-great- grandfather. The researchers found that genes affecting our sense of smell were especially likely to be similar in friends. Although one percent may not sound like much, it is a huge number to geneticists ( 遗传学家 ). Why would friends have more DNA similarities than strangers? The researchers said it’s not clear. One possibility is that similar genes lead people towards similar environments, which then gives them a chance to meet. So it is fair enough for friends to say, “We are just like family,” or “Friends are the family you choose.”

Comprehension Decide whether the statements are True or False. 1. Your DNA codes are totally different from those of your friends. 2. Friends have the same level of genetic relation as people do with a grandfather. 3. The research findings are a great help to scientists who study genes. 4. People with similar genes are more likely to go to the same coffee shop and then meet with each other. F F T T

After reading Vocabulary Choose the best words to complete the paragraph. There is one extra word. ____1____ have conducted a study recently showing that friends tend to be ____2____ in their DNA code. About 2,000 ____3____ were involved in the research. It has been found that genes ____4____ people’s sense of smell. However, it remains a mystery why friends have more DNA similarities than ____5____ strangers. similarparticipantsaffectresearchersexamineunrelated Researchers similar participants affect unrelated

Debate It is you and not your parents who have the right to choose your friends.
