6 When was RIT founded? ImagineRIT RIT traces its roots back to 1829, as the Rochester Athenaeum, a reading society. The Athenaeum merged with the Rochester Mechanics Institute (founded 1885) in 1891. Existed to train a skilled workforce for Rochester's industries such as Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox, etc. Renamed the Rochester Institute of Technology in the 1940s.

7 When did RIT move to Henrietta? Imagine the leadership team making these decisions in those times. ImagineRIT 1961 Decision to move 1966 RIT chosen for site of National Technical Institute for the Deaf 1968 RIT moves to Henrietta campus First freshman class enters NTID
