2 LO: To understand how difficult it can be to free animals from captivity Success Criteria: All: Will be able to describe some of the problems Keiko experienced from living in captivity Most: Will be able to explain why Keiko’s journey back into the wild needed to be carefully planned Some: Will be able to analyse whether or not animals should be kept in captivity for entertainment purposes

3 Free Willy Summary: Willy is captured when he is two years old and goes to live at an Aquarium in the USA Jesse, young boy who gets in trouble with the police, ends up working with Willy and training him to perform so that he can have a bigger tank built Willy has to put on a big performance but gets distracted by the children banging on his tank under the arena so he swims into the side of the tank causing it to leak The bosses are fed up of him not performing so they break the tank further so Willy will die and they can claim the insurance money to buy another whale Jesse realises what is happening and gets several others involved in rescuing Willy and returning him to the ocean LO: To understand how difficult it can be to free animals from captivity

4 In real life… Willy in the film is played a whale called Keiko The aquarium where the film Free Willy is set is called ‘Reino Aventura’ in real life and is based in Mexico where Keiko lived and performed for five years Keiko was captured when he was two years old Keiko, unlike Willy in the film, was a great performer and had many fans Keiko had a bad skin condition, which can be seen in the film, from being in captivity Keiko was released into the sea like Willy but it took months to organise and millions of dollars. If they had put him back in the sea like they did in the film it would have killed him. LO: To understand how difficult it can be to free animals from captivity
