Defining Terms A Critical Process (Personal Life’s Goal) o Missionary Planting – churches and planting movements – must be consistent with life’s purpose. o Required for integrity & staying power. Church Vision Statement – picture what could be! o Broad strokes o Future oriented – what it will look like when we’ve arrived?

Defining Terms A Critical Process Mission Statement – a strategy outline. o Specific components o Present oriented – how will we accomplish the vision? Goals – the detailed strategy. o Timeline, resources, action steps – management by objective. o Daily “to do” lists…

Value of Clarity Personally – provides focus, mission effectiveness, personal fulfillment and satisfaction. Leadership Community – criteria for decision making, resource allocation, “pulling together.” New Believers – commitment to the cause, leadership development. The “Gideon Principle” – clarifies which “volunteers” (transfer growth) you want with you.

What does “the Book” say? What is GOD’s purpose for the Church? What “ends” (telos) are intended?

Developing Your Mission Statement How will you accomplish your vision?

Critical Questions… Who is your target group? What do you know about them? Which felt needs are you seeking to meet? How? Strategy? Style? Where will you begin? Your first priority?

What will be your Keys to making more and better disciples? Which activities will first attract people’s attention? How will the church meet felt needs of your target group? How will ongoing care be provided? How will new disciples be matured? Trained to reach others?

Gather the Pieces/Key words… Target group & needs… Ministry process… Desired ends… Core values & style… Uniquenesses… – no one church fits everyone. What will you not compromise?

“Measure” Your Draft Mission Statement… Does it show: Your heart? Passion? That you know the people you will reach? That you know how? Is it accurate? Enduring? Succinct? Memorable? Energizing?

Making it Memorable Five to ten words The summary you will place in front of your people again and again (Remember: Vision must be recast every 30 days!) Which three ways will you do this?
