1 Notes 4.1 Patterns, Tables, and Expressions A table of values is a table that is used to organize several values of an expression. Example 1 A skating rink sells monthly memberships for $25. It also charges $3 each time you skate. Write a table of values that shows the amount you pay if you skate 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 times a month.

2 25 + 3x = total cost, where x = the # of skates Strategy: Begin making a list for the total cost for skating x times a month.

3 Example 2 During the school year, the skating rink has a student monthly rate of $30, plus a $1 charge each time you skate. Write an expression for the total amount you pay at the student rate if you skate x times a month. 30 + x From the list, you can see that the total cost to skate x times in a month is given by the expression 25 + 3x.

4 Example 3 Compare the skating rink’s plans from examples 1 and 2. How many times must you skate in a month for the student plan to be cheaper? According to the table, at least 3 times.
