Brief Background Frustrated by slow progress on the Western front, the allies looked for a ‘breakthrough’ Dardanelles was geographically significant to both allies and central powers The build up to the campaign started early 1915, with the main assault in Mar 1915 The allies were defeated with heavy casualties, in particular by Australian & NZ troops
