Lesson 6-5B Objective: Solve absolute value inequalities
2
Absolute Value inequalities using < or ≤ Graph the solution set to | x | < 2 means: graph all numbers less than 2 units from zero so…. x is between -2 and 2or -2 < x < 2
3
Solve and graph the solution set: | x – 3 | ≤ 12 -12 ≤ x – 3 ≤ 12 +3 +3 +3 -9 ≤ x ≤ 15
4
Solve and graph the solution set: | x + 4 | < 6 -6 < x + 4 < 6 -4 -4 -4 -10 < x < 2
5
Absolute Value inequalities using > or ≥ Graph the solution set to | x | ≥ 3 means: graph all numbers greater than or equal to 3 units from zero so….x ≥ 3 or x ≤ -3
6
Solve and graph the solution set: | 3x – 3 | > 9 3x – 3 > 9 +3 +3 or 3x – 3 < -9 +3 +3 3x > 12 3x < -6 x > 4 x < -2
7
Solve and graph the solution set: | 2x – 2 | > 8 2x – 2 > 8 +2 +2 or 2x – 2 < -8 +2 +2 2x > 10 2x < -6 x > 5 x < -3
8
Let’s summarize….. | x + 4 | < 7 vs | x + 4 | < 7 vs | x + 4 | > 7 | x + 4 | > 7 less than 7 units from x + 4more than 7 units from x + 4 Graph looks like: Set up and solve: -7 < x + 4 < 7 Set up and solve: x + 4 > 7 or x + 4 < -7
