1.7 “Absolute Value” Absolute Value is always positive!! 7 = 7-7 = 7 **When solving equations or inequalities, you MUST set up 2 separate problems, one will give you a negative value and the other will give you a positive value. Example: 1.Solve x – 5 = 9 x – 5 = 9 x – 5 = – 9
2
Examples of Equations 2. 5x – 10 = 453. 2x – 9 = 15
3
Examples with Extraneous Roots Check for extraneous roots, these are answers that do NOT work. 4. 2x + 12 = 4x 5. 4x + 10 = 6x
4
Try These Check for extraneous roots. 6. 5x – 9 = x + 3 7. 4x – 1 = 2x + 9
5
Examples of Inequalities
6
Practice 1. ½ x + 4 = 6 2.x + 24 = – 7x 3.4x + 5 = 2x + 4 4.½ x – 10 ˂ 4
