BIOMES LAKES RIVERS OCEANS WETLANDS Created by Jill Lenten
2
REGIONS OF THE AQUATIC BIOME Lake Superior Pacific Ocean TEMPERATURE Although water temperatures can vary widely, aquatic areas tend to be more humid and the air temperature on the cooler side. The aquatic biome covers 75% of the earth’s surface.
3
Variants/Factors in Aquatic Biomes salinity depth (pressure) light temperature
4
Marine biome 75% of Earth is water Contains the largest amount of biomass Oceans vary in light, pressure, temperature and nutrients. lack of sediments in the water is a key factor for marine species= light
5
Most important features in marine biomes…. LIGHT!
6
Ocean layers Euphotic Zone- surface waters – Nutrient-rich water – producers Aphotic Pelagic Zone- no light – (below 650 feet) Benthic Zone- sea floor – Sessile organisms (attached to sea floor)
7
Photic Zone Water penetrated by light Includes open ocean Plankton
8
Aphotic zone Dark High pressure 90 % of ocean Adapted to living in the deep
9
Freshwater Biomes Plant life – shoreline – Shallow water highly productive Temperature varies with depth Light – Deep lakes = no photosynthesis Decay – Takes place on the bottom – Decomposers (bacteria) recycles nutrients
