2 Business X420 = Describes your entrance into the world of work as a full-time employee = Required course for all business seniors = Required by all non-business seniors who wish to use the many services of the CSO

10 Tracking Your Grade = Monitor via Oncourse website = If you have questions, email your career counselor = Grade Appeal to your career counselor

11 Class Attendance = One of the ways to collect course points = An evaluation form is used to record your points = Lecture, SCOOPs, and CLIPS use one type of form = Discussion/ADVANTAGE sessions = Complete the evaluation questions and turn in the form as you leave the room. = You must also take the coupon to your career counselor to be logged into oncourse.

12 Attendance Rules = Punctuality is extremely important for all attendance events. = Late arrivals may attend but will receive no grade points. = There will be no late admittance permitted for the SCOOP sessions.

13 Lecture Component “Lecture section” = Grade points only if attending at your assigned time = Change lecture time through the Registrar’s Office

14 MISSING X420 LECTURES MISSING X420 LECTURES = No excused absences - other options exist for obtaining additional course points. = Reminder: The course lasts only ten weeks. After week ten, no grade points can be awarded.

15 SCOOP Attendance = To receive points for a SCOOP session you must attend at your regularly scheduled lecture time. = You can attend a second SCOOP session for extra course points. = Maximum of 9 sessions

16 SCOOP Select Career Opportunities Orientation Program = Feature guest speakers from businesses and industries = Discuss representative training programs and career prospects in their particular field or industry

17 CLIPS Program = Corporate Lectures Information Program = Guest speakers from business and education will discuss: = Their field of concentration = Interview preparation = Evaluating testing = Internet assistance in job search

18 Grade Points = Attendance points = Be seated by the time class begins = Remain attentive for the entire class period = Turn in the special evaluation form = Take the coupon to your next lab meeting You may NOT leave the room during the lecture except in case of emergency.

20 Open Seating - Any Discussion = Attend any of the topics on any of the four nights as long as there is space in the room = Consult the Oncourse Schedule for precise topics, room numbers, and dates = Attendance Points

21 Regular Seating Only = “First come, first seated” priority = Overcrowding of the rooms is not an option = Most sessions are offered at 7 and 8:30pm

25 Advantage Benefits = On-the-job Success = Similar to training and development programs employers use for new hires. = Make up points for earlier missed lectures.

26 Laboratory Section = One-time meeting as group = You will be assigned to a Lab Counselor who will meet with you for 15 minutes each week

27 Lab Objectives 1) Discuss your written projects with a lab counselor and have the counselor grade each project on the spot 2) Have your attendance points recorded in oncourse 3) Ask questions about the course or CSO services 4) Meet alumni and receive suggestions on resume, interviewing skills, and career desires.

28 Labs Meet Every Week = Report each week at the designated time for credit = Be sure to send to your CC via oncourse messenger attachment any written projects due that week well BEFORE your appointment time! = Always bring a printed copy of your current project to lab

29 Personal 15-minute Appointment = You will come to lab every week = You will only be in lab for the 15-minute slot that is reserved for you

31 Written Projects You can choose from 20 different written projects. = Required Project #1, your HTML resume, is due at the end of the first week of class. = Upload via CSO website by 4:00PM this Friday! = Bring a printed copy of your resume to your lab appointment the following week.

32 Project Grading “A” or “B” basis = “A” or “B” quality work to pass = Projects that FAIL may be rewritten at the discretion of your Career Counselor but will only earn a “C” if it passes Do the job right the first time!

33 Project Grade Points Project value A = 4 points B = 3 points C = 2 points IF: passing quality AND... Turned in by due date

34 Project 1 - The HTML Resume = Upload via CSO website = Bring printed copy of resume to next lab appointment = Projects graded on-the-spot = Reminder: syllabus contains due dates for all projects

35 Required Projects = You must complete Project 1 (the initial resume) and Project 20 (job search analysis) to pass the course! = Other than Projects 1 & 20, you are free to choose from the remaining projects to meet your grade goal.

36 Plan Your Projects in Advance = All projects, except the HTML resume, must be completed in Microsoft Word = All projects must be submitted to your CC via oncourse messenger email attachment = See syllabus for details

37 Minimum Written Projects = There are certain minimum numbers of passing projects associated with certain grade levels. = Again, please read the syllabus carefully.

38 Participation Projects = Optional “projects” involve your assistance in the sophomore-level “Career Perspectives” course, X220. = Help with: = Protégé = Coach = BID for these participation projects in the Career Street Journal.

39 Help With X220 Course = X220 participation projects require a brief written report: = Outline prepared remarks = Must be of “A” or “B” quality to merit points

40 Project Grade Form = Most projects will be immediately graded by your career counselor and posted. = Others require an additional form to be submitted and processed: = participation projects = communication skills assessment project

41 Project Assignments = Word-processed = Please keep a signed and dated paper hard copy of each assignment = Discuss your project with your lab counselor during your scheduled appointment time

42 Alumni Mentor Assistance = Lab #3 will feature alumni coming in to offer advice on ways to improve your resume. = Use this time for networking and asking for career advice. = Your career counselor will grade your resume project, not the alumni mentor. = Arrive early and stay later on Mentor evenings.

43 Mentor Informational Interviews = Mid-semester: corporate volunteer and alumni = Discuss interviewing techniques. = Answer questions about the world of work

44 Career Planning Today = Textbook: Career Planning Today (Fourth Edition) written by Dr. C. Randall Powell = Concepts discussed in lecture will be more thoroughly covered in the textbook = Project assignments in the textbook with clarifying details in the syllabus

45 Career Street Journal = Updated daily, the Bidding CSJ contains: - Announcements - Updates - Reminders = Information for bidding for the following services or course segments: - Bidding information for appointments - Full-time employment interviews - Resume referrals - Company presentations - X220 participation projects Always read the Bidding CSJ to stay current with CSO events.

46 Additional Class Materials = Resume Preparation Guide = Helps you construct your resume = Career Services Manual = Describes details on how to bid and use other services of the CSO = FAQ Located on the web at: bpo.indiana.edu

47 Career Services = Majority of X420 students elect to utilize CSO services. = No points are given towards the course for using CSO services = You must be taking or already completed Business X420 by the semester that you start interviewing for full-time employment.
