Carrying on with Phase Carrying on with Phase 1 By 1967 1.5 million properties have been knocked down but the policy was not successful due to the following: Redevelopment could not keep up the price Masses of derelict land Old communities broken up Tower blocks were hostile and unsafe Didn’t tackle economic and social decline 1.8 million houses were unfit for humans habitation 4.5 million were in need of repair

4. Phase 2 Social and economic policies: By 1968 two important provisions: Subsidies – made available to local authorities to expand services e.g. housing, advice centres and nurseries. Community development projects – includes research into why deprivation has been happening and then provides advice on self help for the communities

5. Summary of Phase 2 Polices were experimental and often small scale and a lack of money reduced their effectiveness. For example general improvement areas began to happen, however these began to improve vastly and young couples began to by these properties to get on the property ladder and break into the buy to let market, making the houses to expensive for the people that they were needed for resulting in a lack of housing. This is namely Gentrification.
