Turn to page 228-229 Astronauts travel in different types of spacecraft. What type of spacecraft is launching in the photograph? Where are the people with computers working? A shuttle is manned, or controlled by astronauts and by a team of people on the ground.

Manned- occupied or controlled by one or more people The manned space vehicle landed safely. Launch- the act or instance of launching something The shuttle was set to launch on Wednesday. Teach your partner these words

Command module- the part of the spacecraft that houses the crew The crew lives in the command module. Lunar module- carries the astronauts to the moon-orbiting craft The crew stepped out of the lunar module and onto the moon.

Author’s Purpose The author’s purpose is the reason an author writes a selection. If an author provides a lot of facts, what might be his or her purpose for writing? Today we are going to read about the history of the space program in the United States.
