1
POPULATION an entire group of people or objects that you want information about. Sample the part of the group that is surveyed. This is not new – we used it earlier this year when doing graphs and surveying people.
2
Determining the population when you only have “sample numbers” What can we do????? WE can use proportions!!
3
Let’s try to determine the population of a stream.
4
Missouri conservationists capture and tag 8 fish from our original group. Then release them. A month later they capture a 2 nd group of fish and count how many are tagged. There were 9 fish in the 2 nd group, 4 were tagged.
5
Tagged fish 4 Total fish 9 Let’s use proportions to determine entire population of lake Use cross products property to solve for x – the total population. population
6
Proportions are used to determine populations. Penguin population. Captured and tagged 50 birds. 2 nd grouping – captured 30 birds, 20 are tagged.
7
Homework – create your own population problem and solution This is not team or partner work. Each problem should be unique. Think of a group – you cannot use fish or penguins. Then choose your numbers, Write the problem using words, then math equations and finally solve.
