Welcome To The Hyde Clinic Our project is based on Freud’s theories of personality, and repression. We researched credible sources on the Internet, and designed a presentation to exhibit our findings. We explored Dr. Jekyll’s darker side of human nature through the lens of psychology to see what Stevenson thought about human nature. We evaluated Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’s case files at The Hyde Clinic to decide whether or not to release him/them or not.

Patient: Dr. Jekyll Symptoms: Periods of unconsciousness Seeing a physical transformation Waking up as a different person Uncontrollable episodes of anger Repressed desires Welcome To The Hyde Clinic
9
Patient: Mr. Hyde Symptoms: Beating a man to death for no reason Running over a little girl in the street Rudeness towards acquaintances Ambitious, prideful, evil Welcome To The Hyde Clinic
10
Conclusion: Mr. Hyde, in Freudian terms, is governed by the ID, or the pleasure principle. Dr. Jekyll embodies both the EGO and the SUPEREGO, both components that regulate human behavior and personality. Within each person dwell all three constructs. Welcome To The Hyde Clinic

Dr. Jekyll represses his ID with his responsibilities as a good citizen, a respectable doctor, and a kind friend. His ID, EGO, and SUPEREGO are not balanced, thus creating his alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde is the embodiment of Dr. Jekyll’s repressed ID. He ignores the social behaviors of the Victorian Era, and is driven by Dr. Jekyll’s unconscious desires. Welcome To The Hyde Clinic

Dr. Hyde’s Evaluation: Dr. Jekyll should be re-admitted, to help manage his unconscious desires through a series of psychoanalysis, dream analysis, and sleep monitoring. Mr. Hyde will naturally attend treatment sessions, and will be suppressed with medication until Dr. Jekyll resolves his conflicting psyche. Welcome To The Hyde Clinic

Stevenson clearly viewed man to be both good and evil. However, we cannot determine whether he believed the evil personality to be more dominant than the good one. What we do know is that there is a battle of good and evil, conscious and unconscious taking place within each individual. Welcome To The Hyde Clinic
