Terms you should know Nicotine: The main active ingredient of tobacco. Extremely toxic and causing irritation of lung tissues, constriction of blood vessels, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and, in general, central nervous system stimulation. Carcinogens: Substances that cause cancer. Stimulants: Drugs that stimulate chemicals in the brain causing symptoms such as increased alertness and heart rate. Nicotine withdrawal: When the sudden cessation or reduction of smoking takes places a series of symptoms such as headaches, craving and etc. may follow. Nicotine substitutes: Products used in place of actual nicotine substance to gradually decrease usage
