1 FUNCTIONS OF ORGANELLES
Q1 WK7 D5 EUKARYOTIC CELLS FUNCTIONS OF ORGANELLES Strand 4: Life Science Concept 1: The Cell PO2: Compare the form and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their cellular components.

2 CELL MEMBRANE EXPLAIN: The cell membrane acts as a barrier that lets certain things in & out of the cell. Selectively Permeable- the membrane selects what is allowed in / out Allows certain things in and/or out. ALSO CALLED: SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE

3 CYTOPLASM (not cytoskeleton)
SPACE Area of the cell between the nucleus and the cell membrane Gel-like material of the cell

4 MITOCHONDRIA (or Mitochondrion)
Transforms energy from organic compounds (food) into ATP. Provides power for the cell ATP: chemical form of energy that the cell uses

5 The control center of the cell Stores the heredity information (DNA)
NUCLEUS The control center of the cell Stores the heredity information (DNA)

6 Nucleolus The center of nucleus of eukaryotic cells
The site where ribosomes are made Composed of proteins and nucleic acids

7 Allows specific things in / out of the nucleus
NUCLEAR ENVELOPE Allows specific things in / out of the nucleus

8 ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
Moves protein from one end of the cell to the other

9 Golgi Bodies (or Golgi Apparatus)
Packages and refines proteins

10 LYSOSOME LYSOSOME: Cleans up the cell Digestive organelle; it has enzymes that removes old organelles & foreign substances.

11 Stores enzymes, metabolic waste and water
VACUOLE Stores enzymes, metabolic waste and water

12 Converts energy from sunlight into organic energy in the cell
CHLOROPLAST Converts energy from sunlight into organic energy in the cell *ONLY IN PLANT CELLS

13 CELL WALL Protects the cell Provides structure & support for the cell
*ONLY IN PLANT CELLS

14 Directs the organelles that are involved with cell division (MITOSIS)
CENTRIOLES Directs the organelles that are involved with cell division (MITOSIS) *ONLY IN ANIMAL CELLS End unit
