7. 1. Chief of state  The president is the Ceremonial head of the Government of the United States.  “The personal embodiment and representative of their dignity and majesty” - William Howard Taft  Connects with Americans who are the ultimate source of presidential power

Chief Executive  The president enters office with an agenda -- where he or she wants to lead the country -- and uses the resources available to carry out that agenda.  (1) To enforce federal laws, treaties, and federal court rulings.  (2) To develop federal policies.  (3) To prepare the national budget.  (4) To appoint federal officials.

9. 3. Chief Administrator  The president directs an administration that employs over 2.7 million civilians.  Spends some $2.5 trillion a year!

10. 4. Chief Diplomat  He is the chief spokesperson to the rest of the world.  President Obama meeting with president of Pakistan.

11. 5. Commander in Chief  Commander of our armed forces.  The 1.4 million men and women in uniform and the nations entire military arsenal are subject to the presidents direct and immediate control.

Chief Legislator  He is seen as the main architect of public policy since he is the one who sets the congressional agenda.  He initiates, suggests, requests, insists and demands that congress enact much of its major legislation.  Depending on the party that is in control of congress this can be easier said than done.

13. 7. Chief of Party  By being voted into the executive office he is seen as the leader of his/her political party.
