1 Shape & Form As you look around, you see countless shapes and forms.
What is the difference between a shape and a form?

2 What is a shape? Shape is made by connecting lines
The flat outline of an object A 2-Dimensional outline of an object

3 What is a form? Form encloses space
Something that has length, width and depth Form is 3 dimensional

4 Three basic types of forms
RECTILINEAR ANGULAR CURVED

5 Rectilinear forms The most commonly used form in our homes.
These forms fit together well and help conserve space This form feels stable and secure because of its 90 degree angles This form establishes unity and rhythm when repeated There is a danger of this form feeling harsh or monotonous. However, when placed on a diagonal, it becomes a dynamic element.

6 Examples of square and rectangular shapes used in a house…
Refrigerators Beds Pillows Dish washer Rugs Windows Doors

7 Angular Forms Include triangles and pyramids
Add a great deal of “life” to a room More flexible than rectangles because the angles can be manipulated in many ways The strongest shape Diagonals make things look larger Suggest motion Less common, so they attract and hold attention

8 Examples of angular forms used in a house…
Most sloping roofs Angled walls Window treatments Christmas tree accessories

9 Curved Forms Curved forms combine continuity and change
Bring to mind things found in nature Circles and spheres have unique qualities Conservative and economical forms because they resist breakage Remind us of motion, probably because they remind us of balls They provide great unity--every point on the edge is equil distant from the center

10 Examples of curved forms in a house…
Plates Bowls Lampshades Pillows Tables Chairs stools

11 We usually do not find a home that is made from rectangles, triangles or circles.
We do find combinations of these various shapes.

12 Activity Use the shape templates and create an object. Be creative. You don’t have to use all the shapes on the paper. EXTRA CREDIT: Using the shape create a 3-D form from salt dough.
