What is your nervous system?

Neurons

HEARING & BALANCE
5
Transduction Got it!!!
6
Why do we call our sense of hearing and balance…..the “hairy” senses? Hair cell Cilia
7
Where are these hair cells? Semicircular canals Cochlea External Ear Middle Ear Inner Ear
8
How do these hair cells work? Cilia like hair moves….the cilia bend.
9
When the cilia bends….. …it pulls on the tip links.
10
Pulling on the tip links….. …opens the “door” for chemicals.
11
Bending the cilia on the hair cells… …lets the hair cells “talk” to the neurons.
12
What makes the hair cells bend?
13
First, let’s look at your... …Vestibular System.
14
Rotary Movement Linear Movement Hair cells in different places…. …give different kinds of information.
15
To make the hair cells bend…. …you have to move!!!
16
Moving makes the hair cells bend…. …sending info to the brain.
17
BUT…only some parts of your brain… …get info from your vestibular system. ≠ ≠ ≠
18
Next, let’s look at your... …Auditory System.
19
Molecules in the air move. Frequency Amplitude
20
The hair cells for the auditory system... Cochlea …are wrapped up in a coil.

So let’s see how it works…. http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=IGSKliPSJ7I

So let’s see how it works…. Transduction
23
The brain then gets the info… … about the sounds.
