Welcome to the technical meeting on the future bolometer instrument for the IRAM 30m telescope Monday morning: presentations: context and site, 10 arcmin FOV, ideal specifications / labs presentations. Monday afternoon: Discussions 1, 2, 3, 4: stray light, sky noise / multiband, environment. Tuesday morning: discussions 5 and 6: constraints and compromises / next steps.

The IRAM 30m telescope (MRT, Pico Veleta) In the Sierra Nevada (Spain), altitude ~3000m. 4 atmospheric windows available: 3, 2, 1, 0.85 mm. Primary mirror diameter = 30m, secondary = 2m. F=f/D ~ 10. FOV ~ 4’. Typical diffraction beam ~ 10”. Cassegrain with Nasmyth focus (M3 in elevation axis). Current bolometer instrument: MAMBO 2: 117 feedhorns, FOV=3.5’, NEFD ~ 40 mJy·s 1/2.

baffling filtering state of the art simulations experiments understandable and verifiable results... Discussion 1: Is it possible to suppress stray light efficiently for a filled array instrument fitting the limited room available in the 30m receiver cabin ? Is a compromise of FOV against baffling and filtering necessary ?

sky noise structure anomalous refraction statistics pixel characteristics observing modes sources types data reduction... Discussion 2: Does sky noise affect significantly different measurements with feedhorns and filled arrays ? What are the key parameters for this influence ? See J.Peñalver and R.Zylka's plots in Anomalous_refraction_30m.ppt

2 cryostats dichroics room multicolor pixel filter wheel... Discussion 3: What are technical options for a multiband instrument ?

ElectroMagnetic Interferences Microphonics vibrations accelerations temperature/humidity... Discussion 4: What are the required environmental conditions for various detector technologies ?

FOV number of bands sensitivity technology limitations observing site budget/science... Discussion 5: What are the constraints and compromises to built the best efficient and versatile instrument ?

simulations experiments prototypes financing collaborations planning... Discussion 6: What are the next steps to assure progress towards the future instrument ?
