Objectives SWBAT explain the properties of water by completing the Water: Essential for Life Lab SAT Word: humane (adj.) kind or merciful Drill: 1. Define hydrophobic. 2. Define hydrophilic.
3
Key Vocabulary Nutrients- a source of nourishment for the body Organic- composed of hydrogen and carbon Inorganic- not composed of carbon and hydrogen
4
Water Lab Visit Each Station and Record your Data on your Lab Sheet Station 1 do at your seat. Stations 7 and 8- continue the experiment from the previous group while you are there. We will go over the data as a class.
5
Notes Properties of Water
6
What are the Properties of Water? Polar Molecule Capillary Action Cohesion Surface Tension Universal Solvent Heat Absorber Cooling Agent
7
Molecules that have positive and negative ends because their atoms do not share electrons equally.
8
What is Capillary Action? Hydrophilic surfaces and water molecules are attracted to each other causing water molecules to be forced up through a hydrophilic container (due to bonding).
9
What is Cohesion? Water molecules cling to themselves through hydrogen bonding.
10
Cohesion at a surface (water molecules sticking together at a surface)
11
What is a Solute? A substance that is dissolved into a liquid. Ex. Sugar, salt, kool-aid mix, etc.
12
What is a Solvent? A liquid that dissolves a solute. Ex. Water, milk, etc.
13
What is a Solution? A combination of a solute and a solvent. Ex. Chocolate milk, saltwater, etc.
14
What is a Universal Solvent? Water can dissolve any polar molecules or ion. This includes sugar, amino acids, salt, etc.
15
What is a Heat Absorber? Water can absorb a lot of heat before it raises its temperature and evaporates in the form of steam.
16
What is a Cooling Agent? When water evaporates, it takes with it the heat that is absorbed. This causes a drop in temperature.
17
Summary Let’s go back to the objective. “SWBAT explain the properties of water by completing the Water: Essential for Life Lab” ~Was the objective met? ~Take a moment and summarize what you have learned today.
18
Homework Complete the Extension and Application Questions from the Water Lab.
