Unit 3 Simple Machines

Machines and Work: Motion, Distance, and Speed Vocabulary : – Work: movement of an object by a force – Motion: change of position – Distance: how far it is from one location (place) to another – Speed: how far (distance) something moves in a certain amount of time

Continued Investigate p. 497 - partners Discussion of experiment – whole group – What kinds of motion did you use? Read pages 498-502 in small group – questions following Independent Writing exercise: p. 503 – Write a paragraph that describes the kinds on motion you see on the playground. Describe the speeds and distances of the people and things you observe.

Machines and Work: Weight and Forces Vocabulary: Force: push or pull Gravity: force that pulls 2 objects together (how we are able to stand on earth) Weight: measure of the force of gravity (how heavy an object is)

Continued Investigate p. 505 - partners Discussion of experiment – whole group – How would you be able to sustain the movement of an object? – What variables would you change? Motion and Gravity video: http://www.neok12.com/php/watch.php?v=zX6 4676359061f6b43074555&t=Gravitation

Continued Read pages 506-510 in small group – Discuss: What happens when the direction of motion changes? (Think of a water dam.) - Beaver dam video: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/vide o/player/kids/animals-pets-kids/mammals- kids/beaver-kids.html http://video.nationalgeographic.com/vide o/player/kids/animals-pets-kids/mammals- kids/beaver-kids.html – What happens when the weight of an object changes or the force on an object?

Continued Independent Writing exercise: p. 511 – The moon is smaller than the Earth, so the moon’s gravity is weaker than Earth’s. Write a story about a day on the moon. How would the weak gravity affect you motion?

Force and Friction Vocabulary: - Work: when a force is used to move an object - Friction: force that happens when 2 objects rub together Work video: http://www.neok12.com/php/watch.php?v=zX5 c48667c797c6d5f677502&t=Energy-and- Work

Continued Investigate p. 527 in partners Discussion of experiment – whole group Read pages 528-533 – small group – How can we sustain work using less energy? – Are there machines that we use to keep our commons sustained? What kind? Create a collage showing people doing work – explain what it means to do work
