What is Umoja? Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African/African American students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success.
3
What is the Problem? African American students had the lowest levels of course completion rates (61%) The lowest large ethnic group reporting course completion in all courses was black males (57%) During 1990’s, African American students dropped out of college at the rate that was 20 to 25% higher than the national average for white college students
4
Umoja Mission Our program is designed to support the persistence and retention of African American students toward defined educational goals- Certificates, AA/AS Degree & Transfer Our program includes both instructional and student services English Department Counseling Math Department Ambassadors Tutoring Collaborating with local campuses so that there is an integration of the core Umoja program components with the particular college mission
