2 What is Umoja? Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African/African American students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success.

3 What is the Problem?  African American students had the lowest levels of course completion rates (61%)  The lowest large ethnic group reporting course completion in all courses was black males (57%)  During 1990’s, African American students dropped out of college at the rate that was 20 to 25% higher than the national average for white college students

4 Umoja Mission  Our program is designed to support the persistence and retention of African American students toward defined educational goals- Certificates, AA/AS Degree & Transfer  Our program includes both instructional and student services  English Department  Counseling  Math Department  Ambassadors  Tutoring  Collaborating with local campuses so that there is an integration of the core Umoja program components with the particular college mission
