The first Indians The Tequesta Indians were one of the first Indians to settle in south Florida. They built villages near the Miami river. The chief of the tribe lived at the mouth of the Miami river. The chief of the tribe lived at the mouth of the Miami river.

When the Tequesta tribe lived… TTTThe Tequesta Indians lived near present day Miami. TTTThey lived near the big Miami river.

During the 1500’s During the 1500’s Europeans began arriving. At first the Tequesta Indians did not like the Europeans but then they bought their friendship. The Tequesta tribe numbered about 800 but they stared to die out because of settlement war, slavery, and disease.
