Review Day Drill: How many times a month do spring and neap tides occur? Objective: SWBAT review concepts presented in the unit in order to prepare for the unit test. HW: Study for test

Eclipses Solar Eclipse: The shadow of the moon falls onto Earth. Lunar Eclipse: The shadow of the Earth engulfs the moon.

Eclipses Umbra: The darkest part of the shadow. This portion receives a total eclipse. Penumbra: The portion of the shadow that receives some light. Partial eclipse While the potential for an eclipse occurs twice a month they only occur a few times a year due to the fact that the moon does not revolve on the same plane as the earth.

Moon Phases The moon’s rotation is equal to it’s revolution (27.3 days) so we only see one side of the moon from Earth. As the moon revolves around Earth we see portions of the lit half of the moon creating phases. New Moon, Waxing crescent, 1 st Quarter, Waxing gibbous Full Moon, Waning gibbous, 3 rd Quarter, Waning crescent.

Tides Tides: The rise and fall of water levels. We have two high tides and two low tides everyday. Spring Tides: During a new moon and full moon the sun, Earth, and moon line up increasing gravity causing exaggerated tides (High highs, low lows) Neap Tides: During 1 st and 3 rd quarters the sun, Earth, and moon form a right angle decreasing gravity and the difference in tides levels (not much difference between high tide and low tide.

Seasons Seasons are created by the tilt of the Earth varying the amount of sunlight an area receives. Winter: The northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun decreasing the amount of sunlight it receives. Summer: The northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun increasing the amount of sunlight it receives. N S
