4 Biometric and border control
Heightened security concerns arising from the growth of transnational criem and terrorism have in recent years increased interest in registration systems based on biometric technology. The use of biometric technology in passports, visa and residence permits has been seen as a way of “filing the gaps” in traditional methods of border control In EU, the adoption of a “coherent approach” to travel documents has led to a decision (in the form a Regulation, leaving no discretion to MS) to incorporate biometrics into visas and residence permits for third country nationals and the decision to extend this to the EU passport looks likely to happen till end of the year. IRIS Iris Recognition Immigration System Heathrow 2002

5 What biometric? A man suspected of involvement in last year's Madrid train bombings has been detained in Spain after being extradited from Serbia. Moroccan, 22, faces trial for the bomb attacks which killed 191 people on 11 March 2004. He was arrested at the main railway station in Belgrade in June. He had no documentation and said he was an Iraqi immigrant worker.

6 Definition of Biometrics
What biometric? Definition of Biometrics Any automatically measurable, robust and distinctive physical characteristic or personal trait that can be used to identify an individual or verify the claimed identity of an individual.

7 What biometric? Iris scan • Retinal scan • Facial recognition
• Speaker / Voice • Fingerprints • Hand / Finger geometry • Signature verification • Keystroke dynamics The technology is constantly evolving and recent research has shifted its focus to multimodal biometric identifiers. Facial recognition analyzes the characteristics of a person's face images input through a digital video camera. It measures the overall facial structure, including distances between eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw edges. These measurements are retained in a database and used as a comparison when a user stands before the camera. This biometric has ben widely, and perhaps wildly, touted as a fantastic system for recognizing potential threats (whether terrorist, scam artist, or known criminal) but so far has been unproven in high-level usage. It is currently used in verification only systems with a good deal of success.
