1.1 Computer Performance Your computer performance could be affected by a virus: Makes your system run slower Takes longer to do things Could retrieve information from you computer and allow access to it

1.2 Protecting your system Firewalls Anti Virus Regular system scans Keeping your anti virus software up to date

1.3 Threats Viruses – “live” within computer programs which makes them become infected, e.g. Sampo and Hare. Computer viruses are generally classified as: Boot Sector, Terminate and Stay resident, Macro, Multipartite, Companion and Polymorphic. Types of viruses: Computer Worm- Often used to exploit computers’ files Trojans- often hidden in programs that are not likely to contain a threat, Trojans tend to self destruct and leave no evidence of them being there Logic Bomb- Like a Trojan but can be set to go off at a certain time and date on the computer

1.4 Precautions Anti viruses that can block attacks e.g. Avast, Norton, McAfee, A.V.G etc... Firewalls be careful if some Firewalls are turned off Don’t go on un secure websites Be careful with what you download

1.5 Guidelines for helping staff Change passwords monthly to avoid hacking Anti virus updates Blocking certain websites

1.6 Why it is important to back up data It is important to back up data as if your system does get attacked you could lose important files if you back things up you can still have them
