2 How Democratic Was Andrew Jackson? Andrew Jackson wasn’t democratic. – Jackson made the Native Americans leave their homeland. (Doc. 6- Andrew Jackson’s Message to Congress) – The Cherokee people are mad at Jackson. (Doc. 7- Letter form Cherokee Chief) – Jackson thought that as long as colored men worked, they could be rewarded like white men. (Doc. 8- Jackson’s Call “To Inhabitants of Louisiana” Before the Battle of New Orleans) – From 1794 to the mid 1830s Jackson’s slaveholdings increased. Jackson was a good president at times, but sometimes he was a selfish president. – Jackson rewarded Swartwout by giving him a job in office without looking at his background, which later got him into trouble.
