Report Card/Assessment Formative assessment drives learning Summative does to but is more towards sorting and will not usually drive learning to the same extent The more recent, summative (of) assessments are the most valid Teacher professional judgment is typically…not that valid 3-4 summative, rich assessments in any strand give a pretty good picture 3-4 summative assessments in any strand can mean 9-12 formative assessments before hand! Plan you assessments to integrate several different strands!
5
Planning the Unit What overall expectations will you be assessing (of)/reporting on? (The emphasis may be on these expectations but threads of all the main R and W and O will always be present.)
6
Planning the Unit There may only be 2-3 units each term (3 term year with progress report) The units for the literacy block will have to integrate several different Arts and Humanities expectations (overall). Framing a few big questions works very well for this! Now you have flexibility in your day to day lessons-they all relate back to the theme/question!
7
Questions? What are the humanity topics, and Arts topics I need to cover? When will I teach them? Think about what interests and areas of expertise you have or are interested in…
8
Tricks What types of big questions would I like to have answered? Use of analogy for contreversial/mundane topics Present day examples of age old issues? Big themes in literature (who am I, loss of innocence-growing up, self discovery, love…)
9
Your Unit Plan Needs… A spot to jot down the overall expectations to be reported on. 2-3 Big questions (units) to work on in the literacy block. Integration that includes the Arts (and humanities if it is going to be useable). As many good ideas as you can think of! Your lesson fits in this picture
10
Does not need… Specifics on what lessons will teach what and exactly when Exact assessment strategies Exact order of events
11
Considerations… Start gathering good lesson ideas for LA- there is no text book! Where is the grammar?
12
Baloney Detection How reliable is the source of the claim? Does the source make similar claims? Have the claims been verified by somebody else? Does this fit with the way the world works? Has anyone tried to disprove the claim? Where does the preponderance of evidence point? Is the claimant playing by the rules of science? Is the claimant providing positive evidence? Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory? Are personal beliefs driving the claim?
