1 The DEP Certification Process- Final Steps Bill Laflamme CPESC, Office of the Commissioner MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Protecting Maine’s Air, Land and Water

2 Program Requirements Completion of one eight-hour course in erosion control practices Successful completion of an evaluation of a construction site by the DEP Must be during construction Must have at least two BMPS in place MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION www.maine.gov/dep

3 Construction Site Evaluation Process You choose the construction site to be evaluated ( it does not need to be in a shoreland area ) You must submit a certification application along with photos to the Department for review The Department will respond to your request within 14 days

4 Certification Standards Up to five trained personnel can get certified on one construction site Company certification requires all site supervisors be certified To maintain certification, you must complete a 4-hour continuing education course every three years MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION www.maine.gov/dep

5 Certification is issued for three years, expiring December 31st of the third year after issuance Certification issued in 2012 will expire December 31st of 2015 Certification is automatically renewed by providing proof of having taken a continuing education course Term and Renewal MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION www.maine.gov/dep

6 Revocation Certification is for life provided that you maintain it through continuing education It can be revoked if you are involved in a violation of the erosion and sediment control law that results in harm to a protected natural resource MAINE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION www.maine.gov/dep
